Q1. Why was the ‘holy man’ who gave Santosh’s mother his blessings surprised? (1)

जिस ‘पवित्र पुरुष’ ने सन्तोष की माँ को आशीर्वाद दिया था वह आश्चर्यचकित क्यों हुआ था?

Ans. The holy man’ was surprised because Santosh’s grandmother told him that they did not want a son. They wanted a daughter. This was totally against a traditional society.

‘पवित्र पुरुष’ आश्चर्यचकित हुआ क्योंकि सन्तोष की दादी ने उसे बताया कि वे एक बेटा नहीं चाहते। वे एक बेटी चाहते हैं। यह पूरी तरह से एक पारम्परिक समाज के विरुद्ध था।

Q 2. Give an example to show that even as a young girl Santosh was not ready to accept anything unreasonable. (2)

Ans. As a young girl, Santosh refused to wear traditional clothes and wore shorts. This shows that she was not. ready to accept anything unreasonable.

Ans. She left home when she was sixteen because her parents wanted her to marry but she wanted to get proper education.

जब वह 16 वर्ष की हुई तब उसने घर छोड़ दिया क्योंकि उसके माता-पिता उसकी शादी करवाना चाहते थे लेकिन वह पढ़ाई पूरी करना चाहती थी।

Q5. Why did Santosh’s parents agree to pay for her schooling in Delhi? What mental qualities of Santosh are brought into light by this incident? (4)

सन्तोष के माता-पिता दिल्ली में स्कूली शिक्षा के भुगतान के लिए क्यों सहमत हुए? इस घटना से सन्तोष के किन मानसिक गुणों को प्रकाश में लाया गया है?

Ans. Santosh’s parents agreed to pay for her education as she informed them about her plans to earn money by working part time to pay her school fees. This shows that Santosh was determined to achieve her goal.

सन्तोष के माता-पिता उसकी शिक्षा के भुगतान के लिए सहमत हो गए क्योंकि उसने अपनी स्कूल की फीस का भुगतान करने के लिए पार्ट-टाइम (अंशकालिक) काम करके पैसा कमाने की अपनी योजना के बारे में उन्हें सूचित किया। इससे पता चलता है कि सन्तोष अपना लक्ष्य हासिल करने के लिए दृढ़ निश्चयी थी।

II. Answer each of these questions in a short paragraph (about 30 words).

Q1. How did Santosh begin to climb mountains?

सन्तोष ने पहाड़ों पर चढ़ना कैसे आरम्भ किया?

Ans. When Santosh was in Jaipur for her higher studies, she watched villagers from her room in Kasturba Hostel going up the Aravalli hills and vanishing after a while. This made her curious. She went there and found certain mountaineers. They encouraged her to take up climbing. She saved money and enrolled in a course at Uttarkashi’s Nehru Institute of Mountaineering. There after, Santosh went on a expedition every year. Her climbing skills matured rapidly and she began climbing mountains.

जब सन्तोष अपनी उच्च शिक्षा के लिए जयपुर में थी, तो उसने कस्तूरबा छात्रावास के अपने कमरे से ग्रामीणों को अरावली की पहाड़ियों पर चढ़ते हुए और थोड़ी देर बाद गायब होते हुए देखती थी। इससे उसकी जिज्ञासा बढ़ी वह वहाँ गई और वहाँ उसे कुछ पर्वतारोही मिले। उन्होंने उसे चढ़ाई करने के लिए प्रोत्साहित किया। उसने पैसे बचाए और उत्तरकाशी के नेहरू पर्वतारोही संस्थान मे दाखिला ले लिया। उसके बाद, सन्तोष प्रत्येक वर्ष यात्रा / अभियान पर जाने लगी। उसका कौशल तेजी से विकसित होता गया और उसने पर्वतारोहण प्रारम्भ कर दिया।

Q2. What incidents during the Everest expedition show Santosh’s concern for her team-mates?

एवरेस्ट अभियान के दौरान कौन-सी घटनाएँ दिखाती है कि सन्तोष को अपने दल के साथियों की चिन्ता रहती थी?

Ans. During the Everest mission, Santosh tried to save a dying climber but she was unsuccessful in saving him. Another climber Mohan Singh, would surely have died if Santosh hadn’t shared her oxygen with him. These incidents show her concern for her team-mates.

एवरेस्ट मिशन के दौरान सन्तोष ने एक मरते हुए पर्वतरोही को बचाने का प्रयत्न किया, लेकिन वह उसे बचाने में असफल रही। अन्य पर्वतारोही, मोहन सिंह की निश्चित रूप से मृत्यु हो जाती यदि सन्तोष ने उसके साथ अपनी ऑक्सीजन साझा नहीं किया होता। ये घटनाएँ दिखाती है वह अपने साथियों की चिन्ता करती थी।

Q3. What shows her concern for the environment?

किस बात से पता चलता है कि उसे पर्यावरण की चिन्ता थी?

Ans. Santosh was really concerned for the environment. While on the Everest mission, she collected and brought down 500 kilograms of garbage from the Himalayas.

सन्तोष वास्तव में पर्यावरण के प्रति जागरुक थी। एवरेस्ट मिशन के दौरान, वह 500 किलोग्राम कचरा हिमालय से इकटठा करके नीचे लाई।

Q4. How does she describe her feelings at the summit the Everest?

एवरेस्ट की चोटी पर वह अपनी भावनाओं का वर्णन कैसे करती है?

Ans. Santosh said that the feeling at the summit of the Everest was indescribable and it took some moments to sink in. Hoisting the Indian flag was a spiritual moment for her and she felt proud as an Indian.

सन्तोष ने कहा कि एवरेस्ट के शिखर पर होने वाली भावना अवर्णनीय थी और इसको समझने में कुछ समय लगा। भारतीय ध्वज को फहराना उसके लिए एक आध्यात्मिक क्षण था और उसे एक भारतीय होने पर गर्व महसूस हुआ।

Ans. When Santosh Yadav first scaled Mount Everest, she became the youngest woman in the world to achieve the feat. On the second time, she became the only woman to have conquered the everest twice.

जब सन्तोष यादव ने पहली बार माउण्ट एवरेस्ट फतह किया, तो वह यह उपलब्धि हासिल करने वाली दुनिया की सबसे कम उम्र की महिला बनी। दूसरी बार वह एकमात्र ऐसी महिला बनी, जिसने दो बार एवरेस्ट पर जीत हासिल की।
