Clauses, Structure of Sentences, Function and Uses

There are three kinds of clauses:

1.Principal Clause  2. Subordinate Clause 3. Co-ordinate clauses 

Structure of Sentences

1. Simple     2. Compound     3. Complex

Clause: (उपवाक्य) Group of words which has a Subject and Predicate of its own but forms a part of sentence is called clause.

Examples:

1. I do not know where he lives.

2. Those whom the Gods love die young.

3. This is the boy who met me yesterday.

4. I do not know what she likes.

Kinds of Clauses

1. Principal clause (मुक्ष्य उपवाक्य)  2. Subordinate clause (आश्रित उपवाक्य)

Co-ordinate clauses: (as, and, but, so, or, otherwise, etc.)

Subordinate clauses: (as, because, since, than, though, if, that, etc. Or – Relative Pronouns and Relative Adverbs– (when, which, where, who, that, etc.)

Example:

1. I hope that you are innocent.

Structure of Sentences:

Simple sentence: (Contains one subject and one verb in Predicate part )

Example:

1.The earth moves around the sun.

2. Ashok was a great king.

Compound Sentence: Compound sentences has more than one main clauses. These are joined by Co-ordinating (connectors) Conjunctions.

(and, but, yet, still, so, therefore, or, otherwise, neither…nor, not only … but also.

Examples:

1. He worked hard and passed the examination .

2. You should give up tobacco or you will suffer from serious disease.

Omission of subject:

1. My friend neither works himself nor lets others work.
2. Men may come, and men may go, but I go on forever.

Complex Sentence: A complex sentence has one main clause and one or more subordinate or dependent clauses.

Example:

1. We know that the earth moves around the sun.

2. What my teacher says is quite true.

3. We all know that God helps those who help themselves.
